Demographics
More young people in Generation Z (born 1997-2012) identify as LGBTQ+ compared to older generations. In 2024, 23.1% of Gen Z adults said they are LGBTQ+ (Gallup).
Parental Support
Most LGBTQ+ youth have positive experiences with support from their parents. Almost two-thirds say their parents have shown them acceptance, which is important for their wellbeing (Human Rights Campaign Foundation 2023 LGBTQ+ Youth Report).
Supportive Environments
Being in a supportive environment improves LGBTQ+ youth wellbeing. Teens with access to LGBTQ+ school resources, like Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs), have better mental health (GLSEN National School Climate Survey; National Institutes of Health).
Access to Mental Healthcare
Many LGBTQ+ youth want mental health care 81% say they need it. But 56% of them can’t get it because of problems like cost, lack of support from parents, or stigma (Trevor Project; Human Rights Campaign).
